NEW PRODUCT RUNDOWN The last few months have seen a marked increase in new products to enhance the use of the HydraSleeve No-Purge sampler. This year the level of interest in and the use of the HydraSleeve have increased dramatically and show no sign of slowing. It's hard to ignore the advantages offered by passive/no-purge sampling in general and the simplicity, cost savings and unique features (sample all contaminants, large sample volume, ease of use) provided by the HydraSleeve. 1. We have modified the 2-inch HydraSleeve (fits 2-inch wells, 30" long and holds 650 mls) to hold 1 liter of sample. Tests have shown the modified 1-liter sampler, when equipped with bottom weight, will easily fill within a saturated 10-foot well screen. Currently these samplers are custom fabricated. 2. Two new top weights are available to improve sampling in wells with a short water column
3. In order to provide a non-metallic and less expensive alternative to stainless steel bottom weights we have developed silica sand weights. These weights consist of sand-filled porous, inert filter tube. The durable tubes allow water to saturate the sand, increasing its specific gravity and effective weight when submerged. Stainless steel has a specific gravity about 4 times greater than saturated sand. Due to the density difference, the 8 oz. sand bottom weight must be 12" long to provide the same effective weight as the 2.5"-inch long stainless steel weight in the same diameter. The sand/tubing combination permits custom weights to be rapidly fabricated for specific requirements, i.e. heavier weight needed for multiple samplers deployed at greater depths. Note: Due to the porous nature of these weights they cannot be effectively decontaminated and should be dedicated to a single well. Although the filter tube is durable, we do not know how long they will last. Unlike stainless steel weights, they may periodically need to be replaced. 4. On a more technical note, we have produced a HydraSleeve sampler (HS-2-COMP) that can collect and composite, in-situ, a 1-liter sample from a 7-9 foot vertical interval in a 2-inch well. This is significant because a single sampler, equipped with top weight, can collect and composite fluid from a 10-foot saturated screen, replicating the vertical mixing that occurs when purge sampling methods are used. The long composite sample minimizes the need for vertical profiling (unless desired) in 10-foot wells to assure that potentially stratified contaminants are not missed. In essence, the new sampler provides a blended vertical profile within a saturated 10-foot well screen. A 4-inch well version (HS-4-COMP) is also available. 5. We now have the capacity to make custom suspension tethers and supply spools of suspension line for field fabrication.
